Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Change your thoughts to change your reactions
Break free from over thinking and self doubt
Find support to quiet your mind and create lasting change
Life can sometimes feel like an endless cycle of overthinking, self-doubt, or worrying about things you can’t seem to control. You might catch yourself replaying the same thoughts, feeling weighed down by stress, or wondering why it’s so hard to quiet your mind. These patterns can be exhausting, and even when you try to push through, the heaviness lingers. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many adults struggle with these same challenges, and the good news is that change is possible.
With the right guidance, it is possible to find relief, feel more grounded, and create space for peace in your daily life. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) provides a practical, evidence-based way to understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Through this process, you can begin breaking free from what holds you back and move toward a calmer, more balanced life.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, also known as CBT, looks at the connection between a situation and one’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. With this theory, we find that when a situation happens, we start to tell ourselves different things about the situation, ourselves, the other people involved, and/or the world. Once we attach our thoughts (the things we tell ourselves) to the situation, we then start to feel (i.e., happy, sad, disgruntled, irritated, etc.) a certain way. Then we respond to the situation (i.e., disengage from the conversation, lash out, storm off, etc.). With this, CBT looks specifically at one’s thoughts and works to challenge and change our negative or fearful self-talk, and replace those thoughts with balanced and realistic ones.
What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
How Does CBT Work Online?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy online for adults, gives you the same supportive experience you would have in person, but from the comfort and privacy of your own home through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. This also allows you to attend sessions from any county within Virginia. Together, we’ll talk through what you’re going through, gently explore the thoughts that may be adding to your stress or worry, and practice practical techniques to help you see situations in a new light. Over time, this process can make your thoughts feel less overwhelming and open the door to healthier, more balanced patterns of thinking.
Is Online CBT the Right Fit for You?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can be a powerful approach for creating lasting change, but it works best when you are ready to actively participate both inside and outside of sessions. Online CBT gives you the flexibility and privacy of meeting virtually from anywhere in Virginia, while still providing the structure and accountability that help you move forward.

Appreciate the convenience of telehealth while still wanting meaningful progress and accountability.
Want tools you can carry with you long after therapy ends, equipping you to handle future challenges with resilience.
Meet Your Therapist
Sarah Theimer, LPC, CCTP-II
I’m Sarah Theimer, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional – Level II (CCTP-II), in Virginia. Since beginning my work in the mental health field, I have dedicated my practice to helping adults move beyond the weight of anxiety and trauma. I draw on evidence-based methods such as EMDR, CBT, and CPT, blending practical strategies for everyday stress with deeper exploration of the patterns and past experiences that continue to affect you today. In addition, I offer specialized support for first responders and their families, shaped not only by clinical training but also by my own experience as a first responder’s wife. My heart is to provide a supportive space where you can build strength, gain clarity, and step forward with greater peace and resilience.
My Views on Therapy:
I believe therapy is most effective when it feels like a partnership. Healing does not come from quick fixes, but from a process of exploring past experiences, understanding how they shape your present, and finding new ways to respond. My philosophy is that you are in the driver’s seat of this journey. I am here to guide, support, and sometimes gently challenge you, but the goals we set and the pace we take are always rooted in what feels right for you. I draw on evidence-based approaches such as EMDR, CBT, and CPT to provide tools that are both practical and effective. I see therapy as a place where growth happens by becoming comfortably uncomfortable, leaning into both the support and the stretch needed to create lasting change.
What to Expect in Sessions:
When you work with me, you can expect a balance of warmth, compassion, and gentle challenge. I provide a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore what feels heavy, but I will also encourage you to step outside your comfort zone when it serves your growth. My role is to walk alongside you, help you uncover the root causes of your struggles, and equip you with practical tools that make a real difference in daily life. Together, we will focus not only on easing immediate symptoms but also on building lasting change, so you feel more present, confident, and resilient moving forward. If desired, we can also integrate faith into the process, honoring your spiritual foundation as part of your healing journey.
Is Breakthrough Mental Health Counseling a Good Fit for You?
Choosing a therapist you connect with is a key part of beginning your mental health journey. My role is to create a safe and welcoming space where you feel heard and supported, while also encouraging the kind of growth that comes from being gently challenged. I may be the right therapist for you if you:
Feel ready to dig deeper into what has been holding you back and are open to learning new ways of coping.
Want to work on the root issues behind your struggles rather than just managing symptoms.
Value a respectful, non-judgmental space where your Christian faith can be part of the process if you choose.
Appreciate the convenience and privacy of secure telehealth sessions available across Virginia.
Are looking for a balance of warmth, encouragement, and gentle accountability.
Prefer a collaborative approach where you guide the pace and direction, with me offering tools and expertise along the way.
